Zaid Barakat was a loving son, supportive brother, caring uncle and loyal friend to many who love and adore him. He was the backbone of his family and a solid shoulder for any of his friends to lean on at any given time. His kind heart was always giving to those in need.
At only 40 years of age, Zaid was hospitalized in April of 2021 for urgent and emergency medical care in Amman, Jordan. He remained in critical condition and underwent various medical procedures in efforts to save his life. Sadly, Zaid passed away on April 19th, 2021. May he rest in peace, his memory be eternal and grant all who knew and loved him the patience and acceptance to cope with this tragic loss.
In honor of Zaid and his memory, the Barakat family is encouraging donations to the Palestine Children's Relief Fund's (PCRF) Cancer Projects in Beit Jala and in Gaza. Healing others is what Zaid loved most, and so at this time, his family wishes to continue what he loved in honor of his beautiful soul and memory.
The PCRF is a grassroots organization providing free medical care to sick and injured children throughout the Levant.
The building of this department was sparked by the untimely death of our founding head social worker, Huda Al Masri, from leukemia in July 2009. At that time, there was no department for children with cancer in the Palestinian ministry of health, meaning that sick patients had to cross military checkpoints on a regular basis – if they could get permits – for treatment. In 2012, we began building the first and only public cancer department for children in Huda’s name at Beit Jala Hospital near the ancient city of Bethlehem. Thanks to thousands of private donors all over the world, we opened the department in April 2013. We continue to support the training of staff, medical missions to the department, repairs, material, and the social and medical needs of patients in the department to continue to ensure that our children fighting this terrible disease have access to the best care possible in the world.
