Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas visits Huda Al Masri Cancer Department


On November 6, 2013, exactly seven months from the opening of The Huda Al Masri Pediatric Cancer Dept., Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas toured the department for the first time and greeted staff and patients.

International maxillofacial mission provides treatment for kids in the West Bank


On October 20, American pediatrician Dr. Barbara Preston and nurse Katy Brown arrived in Palestine to start a two-week mission to support the PCRF Handicapped Child Sponsorship Program. Dr. Preston has been volunteering for the past couple of years with the PCRF to come and provide the nearly 300 children that we have in the camps and villages throughout the West Bank, Gaza and Lebanon the consultation and direction that we need to better provide them the support and treatment to help them have better lives.


Italian plastic surgery team enters Gaza for a week of surgery


On Sunday, November 3rd, a five-member team of plastic surgeons and nurses from Bergamo, Italy crossed into Gaza to start a week of surgery on burned children at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. The team was led by surgeon Dr. Enrico Robotti and included anesthesiologist Dr. Alberto Benigni, surgeon Dr. Bernardo Righi, OR nurse, Elisabetta Piazzalunga and British hand surgeon Dr. Yvette Godwin. The team have volunteered many times in the past for the PCRF.

 

Pediatric cardiologist returns to Palestine to provide training in cancer department


Dr. Mike Cooper is a pediatric cardiologist at Kaiser Permanente in the Bay Area. He has been on several PCRF volunteer missions to Palestine in the past several years. In the Fall of 2013, he came to The Huda Al Masri Pediatric Cancer Dept. to teach the local staff how to provide echocardiography exams on children with cancer to ensure that they are properly screened before treatment for any heart conditions. The PCRF also has provided a portable echo machine to the department for this program.

 

Detroit-based orthopedic surgeon returns to Ramallah for medical mission


Dr. Walid Yasir is the Associate Chief of Orthopaedics at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan and has volunteered several times with the PCRF in Palestine over the past decade. He has been volunteering the last week of October and the first week of November at the Ramallah Medical Complex to provide training in treating children with congenital orthopedic deformities, as well as treating patients. This is part of a new PCRF program to build up the services in pediatric orthopedics for Palestinian children in the West Bank.




Urgent Appeals


Hamadah Mohammed Alhoor is a 2 year-old boy from Sorif village near Hebron who was diagnosed with club feet after being seen by a recent orthopedic mission. Hamadah requires casting 3 times at Ramallah Hospital in order to prepare him for surgery, which the family cannot afford, as they are poor and unable to pay for his transportation cost of $140.

 

Dima Mohd Awad is a 4 year-old girl from south Lebanon that suffers from Spina Bifida. Deema requires a Knee Ankle Foot (for both feet) orthosis that costs $1,780, which the family is unable to provide, as the father is the only worker in the home.




  


Climb of Hope

On January 17, 2014, for the first time in history, three injured Arab children will climb Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, to raise awareness and support for the plight of injured and sick children in Palestine and Syria.

Mohammed, Mutussam and Yasmeen have all lost their limbs during their childhood and were treated abroad through the support of hundreds of volunteers in the PCRF. These injured teens are now training hard to climb Mt. Kiliimanjaro with a team of volunteers led by Suzanne Al-Houby, the first Arab & Palestinian woman to summit Everest and to reach the top of Kilimanjaro six times.
